What makes a great movie quote? Does it have to come from a brilliant film or can a great quote pop up from the depths of a terrible movie?
We have decided to count down 100 of the greatest movie quotes of all times – starting with the first ten in this post!
We stress that these are in no particular order and are just in our humble opinion.
100. “Clever girl” – Jurassic Park (1993)
A scene from the 1993 hit Jurassic Park film sees Muldoon attempting to hunt down a Raptor. Whilst aiming his shotgun at the dinosaur, another one unexpectedly pops up from the bush next to where he is standing. Before he is unfortunately made dino-food, he utters the line “clever girl” at the dinosaur. We’re not sure why this one became as popular as it did – but it’s certainly one that people still make quotable today!
99. “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore” – The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Everyone knows and remembers this classic quote from The Wizard of Oz. The line is spoken by Dorothy, who is played by Judy Garland in the 1939 film. After being knocked out by a tornado, Dorothy and her dog wake up in a colourful and strange Oz, which prompts her to say the line.
People love to quote this one whenever they are pulled into a place that they are not familiar with.
98. “Nobody puts baby in a corner” – Dirty Dancing (1987)
I dare you to find someone who didn’t swoon when Patrick Swayze’s character Johnny pulls Baby up from the corner and utters this line. Baby is constantly ignored by her family in favour of her sister, and during a show she is forced to sit in the corner seat at the back of the table. Johnny is having none of this, and pulls her up to dance. Swoon!
97. “You talkin’ to me?” – Taxi Driver (1976)
This is one of them quotes where even people who haven’t seen the film have used it! Robert De Niro’s character looks at himself in the mirror and imagines what he would say if confronted by a bad guy. It’s too funny not to use in everyday life!
96. “My mamma always said ‘Life was like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get” – Forrest Gump (1994)
We write this with a lump in our throat, as this film always gets us teary. It’s Tom Hanks character that imparts this piece of wisdom to the audience, reminding us that life is always full of surprises.
95. “I’ll be back” – The Terminator (1984)
This catchphrase is associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character The Terminator in the 1984 film. He uses the same line, or lines of the same nature in several of his later films. We like to use it every time we leave a room.
94. “You shall not pass” – The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Gandalf utters this phrase as he blocks the path of a demon that is in pursuit of them. We all cheered as he stood up to the fire breathing Balrog demon. This phrase instantly became a hit with fans of the trilogy, and with people who haven’t even seen the film! It’s used a lot in memes that have been created and shared around social media. Go Gandalf!
93. “I’m the king of the world” – Titanic (1997)
Jack Dawson wins his place on the luxury liner as a third class passenger during a card game, and he can’t believe his luck! Unfortunately, he didn’t realise that it would go on to be the last trip he ever made. Sob! The quote is a classic though!
92. “I feel the need – the need for speed” – Top Gun (1986)
Who hasn’t quoted this phrase before? We are pretty sure even people who haven’t seen the film have used it! Maverick and Goose both say this line when they are getting ready for one of their first missions. Has there been anything cooler since?
91. “A boy’s best friend is his mother” – Psycho (1960)
We have nightmares thinking about Norman Bates, but this quote is still a popular one! The creepy relationship between Norman and his mother makes this line significantly dark and sinister – especially once you finish the movie!
Keep checking back for more of the greatest movie quotes of all time – next time we will be counting down from 90-81!
