What Does the Future Hold for TV?

TV is a commodity that we’re all used to having access to on a daily basis, and with technology moving at such a rapid pace, many people often wonder what the TV of the future will look like.

Will it really be a chip in our brain which allows us to subconsciously choose a TV show or channel to watch rather than agonise for hours that there’s simply “nothing to watch”? We’re not sure about that, but what we are sure of is that the TV technology of the future looks set to hold some of the most exciting advancements that we’ve seen so far, and what’s more is that some of these changes are already taking place!

A More Personalised Service

Personalised services are one of the main changes that many of the TV content providers are looking to push in the coming few years, with Netflix being one of the main companies pushing the boat out with a more personalised service.

Their idea of the perfect TV service is one where the user doesn’t need to sit and wonder what show to watch next. A small selection of shows will be suggested based on their preferences and watching habits so that rather than be bombarded with a huge choice of what to watch next, a more tailored suggestion will be available, making that choice much easier.

This system has already been implemented into the Netflix service in a basic form; you’ll often get suggestions of what to watch when the movie or TV show you are watching is over, but these aren’t necessarily completely tailored to what you have been watching.

It is also hoped that this system encourages people to watch suggested content which they may not have otherwise encountered. There are so many films and TV shows that are just waiting to be discovered, and this is a great way to get more people discovering them who may not have known about them otherwise.

Netflix are far from done with implementing this system, and we can’t wait to see how far they can push this content personalisation for the future!

The “Mobile” TV

Could you imagine a future where a TV was operated by your mobile phone? Well, this is the direction that some mobile phone developers and TV companies are working towards!

We’ve already seen the addition of screen casting on the YouTube app which allows users to stream videos from their phones to their screens with pretty much full YouTube functionality still intact, so it’s no wonder that people are looking towards a future where TV can be carried around in your pocket and watched anywhere you want.

Although the phone will have to try a lot harder to push the TV out of the entertainment top spot, it seems like the phone is soon to become one of the TVs most essential allies, especially when it comes to streaming ultra HD and 4K content.

Let’s face it, you’re less likely to misplace your phone than your remote!

The “Transparent” TVs

We’ve already seen a surge of OLED TVs at this year’s CES exhibit, but are these set to be advanced even further so that they have up no space at all?

OLED TVs currently provide a clearer, brighter image than LED or LCD TVs and are already thin, with LG showcasing an OLED model which is less than 1mm in thickness, so can these TV’s be made even thinner while keeping the same high quality picture?

Some manufacturers think so, with many believing in what is being called a transparent TV. This proposed technology aims to create as little disruption in the way of watching TV as possible using ultra thin transparent material which can’t be seen when TV isn’t being watched.

This means that homeowners may no longer have to dedicate a corner or a complete wall to a TV set in the future, you’ll simply be able to turn on your transparent TV and watch the TV directly on the wall, the floor… pretty much anywhere you want to put it!

It is also expected that these transparent TVs will be able to be removed and stored away easily when they aren’t needed, so you can invest in a larger TV and not have to worry about having to have a permanent space available to display it!
