We’ve all been in a situation where we’re talking about one of our favourite TV shows and somebody jumps in with “oh yeah, I’ve watched that, of course I have” before missing every reference to the show that you throw at them. Have they just missed that episode or are they a TV show watching fraud?
A recent survey has found that 42% of people have at one point lied about watching a TV show, and 36% of people have used references, jokes and catchphrases from a show that they’ve never even seen. Well thankfully we’ve got a few tips that will turn you into a regular True Detective (of the season 1 variety of course) so that you can spot these TV show frauds before their dastardly lies get out of hand.
“Uhhh, I Haven’t Got That Far Yet”
This is the classic TV show fraud trick. You ask them what they thought about Joffrey’s death in Game of Thrones and they say that they’re only on season 1. This is perfectly understandable of course; maybe they’re just late to the game (of thrones…). This is where you have to use all of your cunning to root them out. If they say that they’ve only watched season 1 start asking them about things that have happened in that season. You’re interrogations will soon uncover whether they are lying or just a laggard after all.
“Oh Yeah! I Totally Remember That Happening”
These guys are the trickiest to foil. They wait for you to say that you to mention something that happened before jumping in with “oh yeah! What a great scene! Who would have expected that to happen?”. They’re bolder than the folks who have “only watched the first season” because they’re totally committed to their lie.
Thankfully there’s a way to trip these guys up and uncover them to everyone. Start by talking about things that actually did happen: “how about when Sam killed the white walker? And the dragons hatching from the eggs, right?” and then just throw something in that hasn’t happened at all. “What did you think of when Ned beheaded Joffrey?! Totally crazy right?” Hopefully they’ll fall for the trap and start talking about what a game changer that scene was and make a fool of themselves.
Staying up to date with TV shows isn’t difficult and you can easily avoid getting yourself into this situation. It’s always better to watch these TV shows on an amazing TV set. It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to have a great TV though; choosing a graded TV has all the benefits of a new one without the strains on your wallet.
