Ever since the invention and adoption of television, the tendency has been for the device to dominate the room it sits in. At first, this was one of the main purposes of the design, sticking out against any kind of decor your home might have so that it would be easy to show off this bit of high tech equipment. Even today, we find that when we walk into someone’s living room, the first thing we spot is their television, and that all comes down to their design – a design which continues to contrast the look of any room.
However, soon this may be an idea of the past as a pair of French designers have teamed up with the crew at Samsung to design a television set which matches the design of modern furnishings, so that they can blend in with the rest of your room.
That’s right, for the first time it seems the television will complement the design of a room, rather than simply dominate it. The Serif television, created by designers Ronana and Erwan Bouroullec is an ‘I’ shaped screen placed upon an incredibly simple stand of four slim, black legs, and can be covered with an incredibly diverse selection of fabrics to match the interior decor of anyone’s home. These incredible sets mean the days of the traditional grey box or more modern wall screen could be a thing of the past sometime soon!
To add even more excitement onto these sets, they even come equipped with special materials and magnets so that you can avoid the eyesore that is a nest of cables lingering round the back of your televisions.
The wizard Bouroullec brothers approached this television set with the mindset of the antiquated television design. When it came to thinking of televisions, they thought back to when TVs were the thick, heavy grey boxes with a number of different things on the top and bottom of their stands.
With the ‘I’ stand that their sets are built on, that tradition is continued, with enough thickness to be able to hold a number of objects on top and in front of the screen, but with the added bonus of being able to move the television from room to room.
But as the world of television and design don’t exactly go hand in hand, you might be wondering what caused this unlikely team up. Well, design magazine Wallpaper found out in an interview with both brothers and Samsung’s senior VP and design chief, Yun-Je Kang.
In this interview, the brothers discuss working with such a big company, saying that,
“We refuse about 90–95 per cent of requests because we’re too busy, and we generally prefer working with small and medium-sized companies, so the thought of working with such a huge company as Samsung didn’t immediately appeal to us. We had almost three years to work on the project, which is much longer than they’re usually used to.”
Mr Kang also talks about how he’s wanted to branch out into the design world with his televisions for quite some time, “Working with the Bouroullecs is a good way for Samsung to expand the brand into the design world. The television market is very competitive, not only in design but also when it comes to technology and features.”
