How Sony has Improved TV Experience with the Sony Bravia XR

Sony is a well-respected TV brand working with the likes of OLED and 4K technology to provide some of the market’s best-performing TVs. The company has been one of the cutting-edge TV manufacturers for over 50 years. Each decade, the industry giant has continued to use innovation and development to bring out the latest and best technologies within all its devices. The latest, the Bravia XR TV series, offers just that.

As a specialist in providing some of the latest TVs, such as our range of cheap 4K TVs, we explore the Bravia XR line-up and all it has to offer its users.

What Is Sony Bravia XR?

Sony Bravia XR was introduced in 2021 within a range of Sony’s top-end smart TVs. The XR correlates to the technology installed within the devices, which offers artificial intelligence to analyse the content on the screen and recreate it in a way you would expect to experience in the real world. The XR processor detects and assesses the data provided by the content and optimises the colours, contrast and clarity to give the best version of the content possible.

The Bravia XR TV line-up includes various models, including OLED and LED sets with 4K and 8K resolution. The technology also aligns with the likes of Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and HDR to help improve the overall experience the TV can provide users.

Visual Benefits of the Cognitive Processor XR

Whilst many TVs offer AI technology to optimise the onscreen content, XR works at a level above this. The way we, as humans, see the world is in much more depth than a 2D image, and the XR processor helps to achieve this by cross-examining hundreds of thousands of elements.

In every scene, there is a focal point of the image displayed. This is often a character, an object or anything the director hopes you will focus on. The Sony Bravia cognitive Processor XR will enhance this part of the image to ensure the viewer feels more drawn to the focal point. Whilst this technology doesn’t eliminate the background, it will provide extra shadowing around what should be our focus. For example, if you are watching football and a team scores, the camera will focus on the player whilst adjusting the scoreboard. With XR, this is better highlighted   which helps to connect viewers to the main character and block. This function makes for impressive improvements in immersive content.

Depth Mapping: The Sony Bravia XR TVs use the cognitive processor to enhance the depth of images on the screen. Although it achieves this with the focal point enhancement, depth mapping provides layers of detail to the image to provide a more realistic experience. As mentioned above, the human eye does not visualise things in 2D. Instead, it processes depth to our vision to provide the 3D world in which we live. Although this technique has been trialled in 3D TVs, the equipment needed, and the lack of content production made it challenging for many TV manufacturers. However, the XR processor uses the latest technology to add depth to any onscreen picture for a more authentic visualisation of what you are watching. This technological step is taken by cross-analysis of the data provided by the content to understand what the image is. Then by adding additional contrast and toning, the processor relays the image with more detail. This extra detail provides an almost 3D effect of the image on screen and allows much more realistic viewing.

Audio Upgrades with Sony Bravia XR

Sony has significant input into the music industry, so it’s only natural that they focus on providing superior audio technology for even their cheap Sony TVs. The Sony Bravia XR line-up of TVs is no different. Instead of placing speakers  around and behind the screen, Sony explores placing speakers behind the display. This positioning allows the audio to come directly from where the sounds are made. For example, if you have a character speaking on the screen, the audio will come from the speaker directly behind the person speaking. The XR process helps the speakers identify which audio comes from which direction to provide a life-like experience of dialogue and noises coming from the content.

Bravia XR TVs provide a real multi-dimensional experience. They analyse and upconvert audio to 5.1.2ch surround sound, creating a true 3D soundscape. The advanced AI technology within the XR processing chip allows the audio to be delivered in horizontal and vertical directions, providing an immersive experience without the need for surround sound speakers.
