We’re sure you’ll have heard of HD TV by now, if not, where have you been?! Most people know that they want it when they’re on the hunt for Cheap TVs, but more often than not, we don’t really understand what exactly it is, how it works or whether it’s really any better than older sets. In today’s post, we’ll try to answer all of the big questions about HD TV so you are a little better prepared to choose your new television.
What Does HD Mean?
High definition TV allows you to have an all round better viewing experience. It improves the quality of picture providing more detail and sharper images. HD is now offered on certain channels, games and movie streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, which means that unless you have an HD set, you may not be getting the best out of your viewing experience.
The Science Bit
The image you see on your TV screen is made up of hundreds of tiny pixels. The more pixels there are the more detailed picture you will get. Older television sets would be 720 pixels wide by 576 pixels high, but as TV technology has advanced, we’ve moved onto sets that are 1080 pixels wide or more. The way these images are displayed will depend on what type of television you have as LED TVs work differently to LCD TVs.
Standard Definition
The standard definition for TV used to be 576 pixels high by 720 pixels wide. This is what our television channels were broadcast on and it is about the same level of definition as a 0.5 megapixel camera. It doesn’t sound great, but it’s what we were used to.
High Definition
Moving on from standard definition, we have high definition. This is also known as 2K and it is 1080 pixels high by 1920 pixels wide. It’s not as new as you might think as it was designed in the 1980s. It’s also the equivalent of the definition of a 2 megapixel camera.
Ultra High Definition
This is the next step up from HD, and it’s something that many people are starting to look for. It’s also known as 4K and it’s the same format that is used for digital cinema screens, so you know it’s going to look great when your gaming or watching films. It boasts a whopping 2160 pixels high by 3840 pixels wide so you’ll be able to see even more details than ever before as it offers the same resolution as an 8 megapixel camera.
Super High Vision
Now, for the future of television, we have the super high vision which is also known as 8K ultra high definition. It takes picture quality to a whole new level and is designed to give you the same quality as your own eyes! It features an almost ridiculous 4320 pixels high by 7680 pixels wide and will give you the same resolution as a 33 megapixel camera. Don’t expect to see these TVs rolling out too soon as we’re still at the prototype stage, but in a few years time, this could be the next big thing. Get ready to see some incredible detail!
