Guy-Friendly Romantic Movies

There are just over 2 weeks left until Valentine’s Day, but guys, don’t panic! We know it can be a total drag, sitting through another soppy love film starring Ryan Gosling as your girlfriend sniffles in the corner. That’s why we’ve come up with a list of romantic films that you’ll enjoy too, giving you an enjoyable evening, plus some extra brownie points with the Mrs.

Crazy, Stupid Love

Okay, yes this film does feature Ryan Gosling, but don’t rule it out just yet! This film has everything that a great chick-flick should have – it’s got the annoyingly attractive male actor, the cute, relatable female and just enough rejection to have every girl welling up. But it’s also got some great features that make this a guy-friendly rom-com – the girl-next-door looks of Emma Stone, hilarious slapstick from Steve Carell, and Ryan Gosling being turned down.

Love, Actually

What’s not to love about Love, Actually? It has pretty much everything, and by everything, we mean every big British actor you can possibly think of. Although there’s plenty of romance and some mushy moments that may make you turn your face away, there’s plenty of comedy that more than makes up for it! There’s nothing quite as funny as Bill Nighy taking on the role of a washed up, foul-mouthed pop star, so you’re guaranteed to get a good few laughs in.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s not another Disney princess movie. Sure, it’s the story of a girl and a farm boy, and their undying love for one another. But it’s got plenty to keep you entertained, including sword fights, giant wrestlers and an inconceivable amount of action, so you definitely won’t be dropping off while watching this classic.

Warm Bodies (2013)

This film takes the zombie genre and tips it on its head. The idea is that one of the zombies starts to fall in love with a human girl, restarting his heart and reminding him of his humanity. Warm Bodies is ultimately a love story, so it’s perfect for a romantic night in. But it’s got plenty of action, gore and zombies to keep you interested.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

All we really need to say about this film is that it features Mila Kunis. What more do you need? Not only that, but it is hilarious. It has its romantic moments, but it’s mostly filled with ‘guy humour’, ensuring that you will be in stitches all night. Starring Jason Segal, Paul Rudd, Russell Brand, Kristen Bell and, of course, Mila, this is a perfect date night movie to keep both of you happy.

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

This is kind of the ‘anti-romance’ of the romantic films. It’s the story of a failed romance rather than a successful one, and it stays true to that. It’s brutally honest and doesn’t overdo the soppy side of romance, but shows the reality of the fact that sometimes things just don’t work out. It doesn’t sound like a great Valentine’s Day choice, but it has plenty of romance to keep the other half appeased.
