Inspired by the success of recent film to TV adaptations, such as the critically acclaimed Fargo, TV networks are increasingly turning to films as a source of material for new shows. Here we take a look at some of the films that are expected to make a hotly-anticipated transition to the small screen in the near future.
Limitless
The 2011 sci-fi thriller Limitless, which stars Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper, was somewhat of a surprise hit. The film is based on the novel Dark Fields by Alan Glynn and tells the story of Eddie Morra, an aspiring author struggling from writer’s block, whose life is transformed when he begins to take a mysterious new drug called NZT, which allows him to access 100 percent of his brain and realize his full potential.
Keen to build on the success of the film, the American television network CBS confirmed back in October, that they would be committing to a pilot of a new TV series based on the movie.
The TV series will reportedly start from where the movie left off and will see the character of Eddie Morra begin to use his new found intellectual abilities for good.
Few details about the project have been released as yet, although we do know that whilst Bradley Cooper will not be returning to star in the series, he has signed up to executive produce the venture.
The idea behind the movie certainly provides plenty of scope for further development and it’ll be interesting to see how the story continues on the small screen, making this new series one to keep an eye out for.
The Truman Show
Another much loved film set to receive the small screen treatment is the 1998 cult classic The Truman show. The film stars Jim Carrey as an unsuspecting individual who discovers his entire life has been a fabrication and is actually a TV show watched by millions.
The film is based on a truly compelling concept and is both funny and thought-provoking. The Truman Show was also rather ahead of its time, and serves as a clever satire of the reality TV industry.
It was announced earlier this year that Paramount is considering turning some of the existing content it owns, including the likes of The Truman Show, into new TV shows, in an attempt to bolster its television division.
In the right hands, the series definitely has a lot of potential. It’ll be interesting to see what direction the show will take, especially given the explosion in popularity of reality TV that has occurred since the release of the original film.
That’s said, it’s hard to imagine anyone other than comic genius Jim Carrey starring as the character of Truman, after all, those are some pretty big shoes to fill.
Minority Report
According to recent reports the sci-fi thriller Minority Report is also currently being developed in a TV series by the Fox network. The 2002 film, from director Steven Spielberg, starred Tom Cruise as a member of a special police force known as the PreCrime unit, which uses the psychic powers of so-called Pre-Cogs to arrest murderers before they have a chance to commit their crimes.
The series will reportedly act as a sequel to the film. Set 10 years following the closure of the PreCrime unit, the plot will focus on one of the remaining Pre-Cogs as they struggle to adjust to a normal life, despite being plagued by haunting visions of the future.
Few other details about the series have been released so far, and the cast has yet to be announced, though the series could be hitting our screens as early as fall 2015!
