Everything You Need to Know about Inputs and Input Lag

Unless you live and breathe technology, it’s very unlikely that the word ‘inputs’ fills you with excitement. However, if you want to ensure that you get the best possible quality while on the hunt for cheap TVs, it’s one of the things which you should probably brush up on.

Don’t worry, we don’t expect you to spend hours on the research – in fact, we’ve done it all for you, and pulled everything together into this handy guide… so here’s everything you need to know about inputs and input lag in one easy read.

HDMI

This is the connection point which you’ll almost certainly need, and it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll come across a modern TV which doesn’t have a HDMI input. In short, any set-top box, modern games console or blu-ray player will plug in here, so you’ll definitely want this to be working.

Scart

Scart is the input which used to do the job that HDMI does now (supporting standard definition but not HD), so if you have older DVD players or even a VHS player then you might want to find a TV which has a scart option.

S-Video

With S-Video, we’re starting to get really old school – but that doesn’t mean it’s obsolete. If you want the option to play on retro games consoles then it’s very likely that you’ll need the S-Video input.

Optical Audio Connection

Although HDMI is generally the first port of call for connecting audio devices as well as visual ones, it isn’t always an option with slightly older tech. Never fear, as in steps the optical audio connection, allowing you a different option for that crisp and clear sound!

USB Ports

Not every TV comes with a USB port so it’s certainly worth checking if you want the option of connecting a portable storage device or camera to the TV to view photos. If you want to connect a PVR device then you’ll also need to be sure that the USB input is 2.0 or above.

Input Lag

There are a few other inputs out there, but today we’ve taken you through all the most important ones! The final thing that you’ll need to know about, at-least if you’re a gamer, is input lag. Simply put, this is the delay between something happening with the device that you’re using and that being reflected on screen.

When playing a game, this can make it tricky to keep up with the action, especially if you’re connected to other players online. Sound like an important concern? If so, try and pick a TV which doesn’t have too big a lag.

Once you’re done wrapping your head around the many different inputs, it’s time to choose the TV which has every option you need.
