The Fall
This week has been abuzz with reactions to the new series opener of the BBC detective drama series The Fall, which returned for its second season on Thursday night. The first season of this show proved a huge hit, largely thanks to its stellar cast which includes Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. This series in many respects put a whole new twist on the detective drama formula. From the outset the show has divided both audiences and critics and at times makes for rather disturbing viewing. Nonetheless the series has proved one of the BBC’s most popular dramas for years and is worth watching, so you can form an opinion for yourself.
True Detective
Undoubtedly one of the best detective series to have graced our screens of late is the epic drama series True Detective, produced by the American network HBO. The series follows the story of two detectives who find themselves entangled in a 17-year game of cat and mouse with a serial killer. True Detective was quite possible one of the most highly acclaimed shows of the past year and is a tale with more than a hint of darkness, and makes for truly compelling viewing. According to the rumour mill the show will also be retuning for a much anticipated second season in the near future.
The Bridge
The past few years have witnessed the rise of the Scandinavian crime dramas, which have in many respects become a genre in their own right, achieving a cult following. Slightly lesser-known than its much talked about counterpart The Killing, The Bridge is a Scandinavian crime drama that really packs a punch, and provides a welcome break from some of the more formulaic crime dramas that have been produced of late. If you only check out one Scandinavian crime drama this year, make sure it’s this one.
