At Cheap TVs you may think we don’t have much of a leg to stand on in this debate. TVs see things at 24 or 25 frames per second. The TV equivalent in the gaming world, however, is 30 FPS. So yes, we are debating.
The debate of which is better, 30 or 60 FPS, is a battle of great techie… shall we say discussion of late. Spurring heated discussions across the internet, whether you can or can’t tell the different between these two frames by eye alone, the facts don’t lie and, ladies and gentlemen, here are some of the facts.
Fact 1- The human eye can see more than 30 FPS
That’s right, despite some beliefs, the human eye can see more than a mere 30 FPS…well… we’re guessing. The human eye doesn’t actually see in frames so trying to dispute this little fact has caused some passionate debates across the web. There are far too many variants involved when it comes to measuring the human eye (arguably our most complex body part) though a test was performed on Air Force pilots and they yielded some surprising results…
Pilots were exposed to an image of an aeroplane that was flashed across a screen for only 1/220th of a second. The lasting impression meant that the pilots were able to identify the image without trouble.
This piece of evidence, along with other similar tests, proves that the human eye is more than capable of seeing images over 30 FPS… and possibly well over 200 frames as well!
Fact 2- 60 frames per second is a smoother playing experience compared to 30
Yes it may surprise some of you, but there are people out there who claim that a 30 frames plays a lot smoother than a 60 frame. Let’s set this record straight. If you’re playing a 30 FPS game, your screen focuses on a single frame for roughly 33.3 milliseconds before moving on.
Now we know this isn’t taking into consideration lag time and other human variants such as the time it takes you to hit a button on your console, but with the 60 FPS halving this time to roughly 16.65 milliseconds, it’s pretty safe to say that the response time is a lot faster.
There are some, however, who disagree for other reasons. They don’t dispute the fact that 60 FPS is like playing a video game in HD, but they do present an interesting point of view; 30 FPS delivers a better story line. Usman Pirzada of WCCF Tech says: “When you see a video shot at 24fsp/30fsp there are holes to fill and your brain automatically does this by literally creating stuff out of your imagination.”
Perhaps the debate then should focus less on which FPS is the technically superior and start to discuss which FPS is more creatively advanced?
