With every new year comes the highly anticipated awards season.
From the stunning outfits to the red-carpet drama, these prestigious award ceremonies dominate the international press.
For actors and actresses, years of hard work can finally be recognised, and the season is a joyous occasion for the multi-million-pound industry.
With this exciting season almost over for this year, here at Cheap TV’s, we thought it would be lovely to have a look at some of this year’s most honourable nods.
The Highlights
The Oscars – 4th March
Often referred to as the most prestigious awards ceremony ever, the Oscars has been for the past 90 years, the ceremony that spectators all around the world await with bated breath.
This year certainly did not disappoint, with an estimated 32.9 million viewers in the US alone tuning in on the night.
This year’s Best Actor award went to London born Gary Oldman for his turn as previous Prime Minister of Great Britain Winston Churchill, and in his career spanning 40 years this was his second Oscar nomination.
The award for Best Actress went to Frances McDormand for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, in which she played a grieving mother seeking justice for her deceased daughter.
McDormand made a poignant acceptance speech asking for support towards women within the entertainment industry, and the moving speech quickly became one of the highlights of the 2018 awards season.
Golden Globes – 7th January
The 75th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, which was held in Beverly Hills, California, saw important figures from the entertainment industry arrive in style on January 7th.
Unsurprisingly the awards are known to be an indication of whom could win the ensuing awards at the Oscars ceremony, and this year was no different.
Gary Oldman and Frances McDormand led the way with their respective Best Actor and Actresses awards; the Best Drama Motion Picture award went to the fantastic Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Other highlights include popular streaming service Hulu’s adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale taking the globe for Best Drama TV Series, with its protagonist played by Elisabeth Moss winning the award for Best Actress in a Drama TV Series.
Screen Actors Guild Award – 21st January
A relatively new awards ceremony, when compared with the likes of the Oscars or the Golden Globes, is the fabulous Screen Actors Guild Award (commonly referred to as the SAG Awards), which this year celebrated its 24th year.
The ceremony, which is also held in Los Angeles, California, celebrated the best achievements from the world of entertainment.
Specific highlights included Alison Janney winning the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of LaVona Golden in I, Tonya.
The role, which was based on real-life mother of titular character Tonya Harding, showcased Janney’s exquisite acting abilities, as she assumed the character of an emotionally abusive, cold-hearted, over-ambitious mother.
The respective Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role went to Sam Rockwell for his evocative portrayal of a volatile, racist police chief in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
On accepting his award, Rockwell thanked his family and friends along with his fellow actors which starred in the groundbreaking film with him.
With only one awards ceremony left of the season, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, spectators can look forward to yet more highlights from another excellent year in television and film.
