Are You Afraid Of The Dark? Scariest Movies Ever Made (part 2)

We return with part two of our list of the scariest movies ever made, we hope you checked out some of our picks from part one. Now we’re getting into the really scary stuff, so grab a pillow and your favourite teddy bear for protection and let us round off our list of scary films.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Whether a horror fan or not, everyone has heard of this film- or at least heard of Freddy Krueger, that is. Yes, it’s no understatement when we say everyone is terrified of Freddy Krueger and it’s easy to see why. The kids of Springwood all begin to dream of the same man, and that man just so happens to be a burned up, dead serial killer who’s using dreams to prey on the children of the people who killed him. Heck!

As more of her friends fall victim to Freddy, Nancy must find a way to bring him out of the dream world and into the real one if she has any hope of stopping him.
Ranked highly on every best horror film list, as well as being remembered for its special effects and sets this really is one of the scariest films out there.

‘Whatever you do, don’t fall asleep’

In the Mouth of Madness (1995)

While critics found this film to be the weakest in John Carpenter’s ‘Apocalypse trilogy’, this confusing but clever psychological horror will leave anyone terrified to the bone.

John Trent is hired to find the missing horror writer Sutter Cane whose work is said to have a profound effect on its readers, causing them to be paranoid and violent with visions of creatures from another dimension. Trent travels to the fictional town of Hobb’s End, a place which only exists within Cane’s work and finds it falling into chaos, and when he finds Cane he realises he’s merely a pawn in a much bigger game.
Inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft, it’s perhaps in the films ending that the true form of horror can be found. Questioning the ideas of sanity and free-will in true Lovecraftian fashion, In the Mouth of Madness earns its rightful place on this list.

‘Do you read Sutter Cane?’

The Evil Dead (1981)

Ever wondered where the cabin in the woods set-up came from? Well here it is, The Evil Dead.

Let’s just say if you’re travelling to a remote cabin in the middle of nowhere, don’t play a recording of someone reading aloud from a book called ‘The Necronomicon’. If you do, don’t expect to have a fun holiday as you’ll find yourself fighting off ancient demons who want nothing more than to possess your body and torment your soul.
The Evil Dead earns the top space on our list for its sheer unrelenting dishing of scares and horror- there’s a particularly gruesome scene involving an ankle and pencil.
