When we’re not providing the very best cheap TVs, we love to kick back, relax and enjoy some Breaking Bad. Now, as we’re sure you know Breaking Bad has earned a reputation as one of the best TV shows ever made, making its way to the top of many favourite lists as well as having a large influence on culture, with businesses naming themselves in reference to it. A clear indicator of just how popular the show is is that even though its run finished over two years ago, people are still talking about it. How couldn’t they? Anyone whose watched it will agree that it’s not hard not to spend hours debating the characters, or the plotlines, or even the soundtrack. But the hottest topic on the lips of every fan is the show’s ending.
Now an ending can either make or break a show; if it’s good, it’ll round out all the plot threads and leave the viewer feeling satisfied for their investment of time and emotion. If it’s not so great, it’ll leave a bitter, angry taste in the mouth of every fan, who will then go on to denounce said show of any love they ever had for it (We’re looking at you Sopranos). In Breaking Bad’s case, the judgement on its end seems to be unanimous, that it was the perfect ending to a TV show- one which not only left every fan satisfied, but primed like a spring, ready to talk about it the first opportunity they got. But what is it about Breaking Bad’s ending that makes it so special?
Well there are more than just a few reasons, but we’ll be brief because we wouldn’t want to spoil too much for anyone yet to watch it (Seriously, watch it!).
For us, it was how the curtains fell for Walter. Leading up to the finale, Walter has been on the run after being revealed as the infamous ‘Heisenberg’ and has made it to every most wanted list. Using the little connections he has left, he makes his way back home to settle the scores he left un-checked. He secures his fortune, kills off his competitors and says a final goodbye to his wife and baby (not necessarily in that order).
It’s the imperfection of how all this is achieved that really shows how well thought out this ending was; Walter gets his fortune but has to threaten the lives of two of his oldest friends to get it, he gets to say goodbye to his wife who hates him, he gets to say goodbye to his baby who’ll most likely grow up hating him, and gets to see his son one last time…who hates him. Even when he’s eliminating the bad guys, it doesn’t go smoothly for him as his homemade turret ends up fatally wounding him. All these imperfections end up creating the best bitter-sweet ending we’ve ever had the fortune to watch and it makes it clear to see why not only are people calling the ending one of the best, but the show itself. If you haven’t seen it yet, we can’t recommend enough that you watch it as soon as possible!
Oh and this little number for the finale’s soundtrack…incredible.
