5 TV Shows Saved by Online Streaming Sites

We’re still reeling from the fact that NBC have announced that they’re cancelling the instant cult classic Hannibal – a show that definitely deserved to go to at-least the 6 seasons that writer Bryan Fuller had planned! Here’s to hoping that a great streaming site like Amazon Prime or Netflix will pick it up in the next few months, it’s happened before after all…

Arrested Development

Hoards of dedicated fans may have been absolutely devastated when Fox cancelled Arrested Development back in 2006, but it also cemented the show’s impressive status as everybody clamoured for more of what they could no longer have! Netflix saw the potential for attracting new fans to their site, and their creation of a 4th season seven years after its initial cancelation kicked off a whole new trend for reviving fan favourites.

Community

One of the more recent shows to benefit from what we’re now going to call ‘the Arrested Development effect’ was Community – another slightly bizarre comedy with legions of loyal fans, but low ratings on TV. Community was cancelled after its 5th season, but supporters took to twitter with the ‘6 seasons and a movie’ slogan from the programme, demanding that another network picked it up. They’re prayers were answered when Yahoo Screen decided to take a chance on it, leaving the reigns in creator Dan Harmon’s more than capable hands.

Ripper Street

Another one now on Netflix’s books, Ripper Street was originally a BBC drama, making this the first show from the UK to be saved all thanks to online streaming. The tense thriller centres on the infamous Whitechapel murders committed by the still anonymous Jack the Ripper, with a fictionalised account of the events surrounding those grizzly crimes.

The Killing

When American audiences got wind of the incredible Danish drama The Killing, they quickly fell head over heels in love with its raw, gritty atmosphere. US producers wasted no time in creating their own version, and although we’re often dubious about remakes, this was surprisingly addictive, with reviewers suggesting that the style was even reminiscent of the great David Lynch.

Sadly this wasn’t enough to stop cancellation, but once again Netflix were on hand to revive the series – in this case absolutely essential, as without their final series The Killing would have been left with a lot of untidy loose ends.

The Mindy Project

Here’s one for Hulu – The Mindy Project, which they chose to pick up almost immediately after Fox announced that they would be cancelling it this year. We’re yet to see what they’ll do with the show, but so long as it remains in the hands of hilarious and multi-talented Mindy Kaling, we doubt they can go far wrong. Originally known for playing Kelly Kapoor in The Office, this is the sit-com that gave Kaling the chance to show that she could more than hold her own as a leading lady, and we can’t wait to see more of it.

It’s always sad to see a favourite show get slashed from the schedule, but with the rise of online streaming sites there are more and more opportunities to watch them come back bigger and stronger than ever, with all the other conveniences that streaming brings!
