4K technology made its first real splash as a format in the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, a full decade ago. It had enough support from the beginning to get support, but to begin with there were some notable technological issues holding it back. 4K resolution videos equal around four times the size of standard 1080 pixel HD videos, with 4K movie titles ranging from a few dozen gigabytes to in excess of 100GB. So when a user is downloading a movie they have bought or streaming at the highest quality, they are entirely at the mercy of their bandwidth.
Over the past decade, more and more of the nation has seen its bandwidth improved and pushed to new levels, with a huge spike as a result of the pandemic. With that, streaming in 4K becomes plausible for more and more people, and the biggest weakness that 4K TVs had has gone.
