At Cheap TVs we get excited by the advances and evolution of a technology, especially when it means we can increase on our already vast range of cheap LED TVs. When technologies evolve, it generally leads to a tangible benefit for the consumer, be that superior internet speeds or simply improved televisual viewing. And one of the biggest evolutions in the past two decades was the 4K TV.
4K technology made its first real splash as a format in the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, a full decade ago. It had enough support from the beginning to get support, but to begin with there were some notable technological issues holding it back. Ten years on, these are a thing of the past, and now a 4K TV is the standard we should aspire to for our free time.
The ever-growing popularity and availability of 4K TV is causing a drive in the global TV industry, with more brands entering the market. As competition intensifies, consumers will hopefully reap the benefit as sets become more affordable. A decade ago, sets could be had for no less than £1500 for a Sony, and sometimes in excess of £3500 – but today, we have 4K TVs available for as little as £179.99.
Each new advancement in 4K technology opens the door for further and further advances. The development of 4K cameras from Canon and Sony, as well as the instalment in smartphones, means that users can easily record their precious moments in 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD).
So what held 4K back to begin with? That good a picture requires a huge file size for any video you stream or have broadcast.
4K resolution videos equal around four times the size of standard 1080 pixel HD videos, with 4K movie titles ranging from a few dozen gigabytes to in excess of 100GB. So when a user is downloading a movie they have bought or streaming at the highest quality, they are entirely at the mercy of their bandwidth.
Over the past decade, more and more of the nation has seen its bandwidth improved and pushed to new levels, with a huge spike as a result of the pandemic. With that, streaming in 4K becomes plausible for more and more people, and the biggest weakness that 4K TVs had has gone.
With the increase in 4K channels worldwide and the greater prevalence of 4K recording and converting technologies, you can certainly expect to experience a greater presence of 4K technologies in your very own living rooms. So get excited! We certainly are!
