Everyone loves a good Disney film, even those who won’t admit it out loud. They have been entertaining people of all ages since the 1930’s when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs became the first fully animated feature film to be released.
The release of Snow White pioneered a new form of family entertainment, and since then we have had a whole host of fantastic and memorable Disney movies to enjoy.
Even decades since their first movie release, Disney continues to create movies that combine masterful ideas, heart warming storylines and characters that we love to root for.
We have put together a list of some of our personal favourite Disney films – and we admit it was really hard to narrow it down!
The Little Mermaid (1989)
Released in November 1989, The Little Mermaid is based on a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. It follows Ariel, a mermaid who dreams of becoming human.
With her best friend Flounder, Ariel often collects human possessions that have floated to the bottom of the sea – such as hairbrushes and cutlery.
After rescuing Prince Eric from a shipwreck, Ariel makes a deal with a sea witch in which she is granted three days as a human – at the cost of her voice. The only way to gain her voice back before she turns back into a mermaid is to receive a true loves kiss. Unfortunately Eric is searching for the girl who rescued and sang to him – something Ariel is unable to do without her voice.
The Little Mermaid marked the beginning of the Disney Renaissance period – an era between 1989 – 1999 where Disney were credited with bringing new life to their movies.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Beauty and the Beast was first released in November 1991 – making it to the 30th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series.
This musical romantic fantasy film is about how people can find love at the most surprising times and with the most unexpected of people.
Belle is a young girl living in a small French town with her eccentric father. She spends most of her days fighting off the unwanted affection of conceited Gaston, stopping her father from blowing himself up with his crazy inventions and getting lost in her favourite books.
When her father is taken hostage by the Beast (a prince who was cursed by a spell because of his arrogance and inability to love), she offers herself up in his place. Whilst they have a troubled start, the unlikely couple begin to bond – with Belle still unaware that he’s really a handsome prince.
Beauty and the Beast has had many adaptions over the years, but the original remains our favourite!
The Lion King (1994)
Hakuna Matata!
Lion King was released in June 1994 and soon became one of the all time classic Disney films.
It takes place in the Animal Kingdom in Africa, following a family of Lions. Simba is young lion who is set to succeed his father, Mufasa, as king when he is older. However, Mufasa is murdered by his jealous brother Scar, and Simba is manipulated into thinking he is responsible. Simba is devastated and flees his home – meeting good friends along the way. He is persuaded to return home and challenge his uncle to the throne.
The Lion was later adapted to a musical in 1997 and has been one of the most watched musicals since – still popular today!
Frozen (2013)
No list of Disney favourites would be complete without Frozen! It’s the newest film on our list – released in November 2013.
Elsa possesses powers that allow her to manipulate and produce ice, snow and frost. After injuring her sister as children, her parents forbid her from using them and she is taught how to conceal them. Years later after the death of her parents, she is crowned queen and after fighting with her sister, she accidently reveals her powers and sets off an eternal winter.
After fleeing the castle, her sister Ana must find her and convince her to fix the weather and come home! She makes friends along the way, and even manages to find love.
The film has been a massive success. It earned over 1.3 billion in worldwide box office revenue – with $400 million alone in the USA. It has become the highest grossing animated film of all time, and the highest grossing film of 2013.
It’s a huge hit with children and adults – and we dare you to try get the songs out of your head!
