Mistakes happen – fact. But when they happen in our favourite movies these screw ups can be pretty darn distracting!
All movies, even great ones, feature an array of cinematic errors. Most of these go unnoticed and are likely only spotted by the most eagle eyed viewers.
But some are so painfully obvious it’s a wonder they ever made it off the cutting room floor.
Intrigued? Then you’re in luck, as here we’re going to take a look at some of the greatest gaffes in movie history – prepare to be amazed, surprised and perhaps even a little disappointed!
North by Northwest
This epic spy thriller is one of Hitchcock’s greatest masterpieces. But aside from being pure cinematic gold it’s famous for featuring a pretty epic gaffe too.
Being an extra in a film is harder than you might think – just ask the kid in this film’s epic Mount Rushmore shooting scene.
Obviously tired of the multiple noisy takes it took to produce the scene, you can see the boy in the background plugging his ears in anticipation of the shot. Either he’s psychic, or he knew exactly when to cover them to stop his ears from ringing – after enduring previous takes!
Gladiator
There’s nothing like messing with the period illusion for spoiling a perfectly good movie.
The Romans are famous for being the inventors of numerous technological advances. But that said, we’re pretty sure that gas propulsion wasn’t one of them.
During the movies ‘Battle of Carthage’ re-enactment scene, one of the chariots in the Colosseum is turned over. Once the dust finally settles, a gas canister, hidden in the back of the chariot is revealed – rookie error!
Independence Day
Ok, so you could argue this entire movie is one big gaffe. But aside from the awful acting, and myriad of plot problems, the film features a number of other obvious mistakes too.
In the scene in which Jeff Goldblum throws a massive tantrum inside area 51 – to be fair the world is about to end – he knocks over several bins. Not a big deal right? wrong!
One of these just happens to be labelled with the words ‘Art Dept’… which is a little odd considering it’s in a top secret underground military facility – but who knows maybe they’re big on design.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
We’ve all heard of cowboys and aliens. But what about cowboys and pirates?
In the films closing scene, just as Captain Jack Sparrow mutters the immortal words ” on deck, you scabrous dogs”, a crew member – touting a cowboy hat and sunglasses- is visible to the very left of the screen, gazing out towards the sea.
How such an obvious blunder made it into the final cut has left us scratching our heads. But maybe it was just an elaborate set up for yet another instalment in this long running franchise – Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Cowboy.
10 Things I Hate About You
Remember 10 Things I Hate About You? This fantastic film elevated the typical teen movie to another level, thanks to its delightfully sharp script and killer soundtrack – oh and it also stars an effortlessly charismatic Heath Ledger in his breakout role too!
That said, even this film had its fair share of errors. Take the hilarious scene in which Bianca accidentally shoots her gym teacher with an arrow for example.
A concerned student can be seen running for help, but only seconds later that same student can be seen giving up and stopping, to play with her hair – now that’s just cold!
So there we have it, some of the biggest mistakes in movie history – how many did you spot?
