If there’s one thing we all know is true it’s that when you’re a major Hollywood star, it’s not all about jumping off tall buildings, putting pedal to the metal and attracting a love interest via a convoluted system of ropes, pulleys and hammy one-liners. Nope, probably the biggest reason to hit the big screen is, well, the big bucks!
Yep, no-one else on Earth can command the sorts of salaries folks like Tom Cruise can, even if it’s just a two-second cameo that takes three-seconds to film. So there’s only one thing for it, right? Let’s get our noses nosey and check out who’s really at the top of the Hollywood rich list and who got paid the most for pretending to be someone they’re not last year.
Chris Hemsworth
What is a Chris Hemsworth, I hear you ask! It’s a rare breed of former soap star who’s gone on to bigger, better and far less trite things in the acting world. Yep, before he played God-like superhero Thor in the Marvel movies, the criminally handsome Hemsworth jobbed in Aussie soap Home & Away (‘You know we belong together…’). Since the comic book films launched him into super-stardom, Hemsworth has been raking in the coin. How much coin? Try $37 million of them!
Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio was the pretty boy pin-up whose face now resembles the broadside of Dover’s coast. But we can’t knock him for that when he’s starred in such awesome films as Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street. Turning himself from poster boy for all things unholy in Hollywood (unHolywood?) into a genuinely accomplished actor has paid dividends for ol’ Leo. Last year he made $39 million.
Bradley Cooper
What can we say about Bradley Cooper? Well, we’ll forgive him for starring in The A-Team, on account of enjoying his performances in American Hustle, American Sniper and Silver Linings Playbook. After making his name in an A-list actioner, Cooper’s always picked the perfect roles. And it seems Hollywood accountants have also forgiven Cooper’s A-Team misstep. In 2014 alone, the new kid on the block earned $46 million.
Dwayne Johnson
Remember when Dwayne Johnson was called ‘The Rock’? This guy’s a surprise on two levels. One, he’s a wrestling star-turned-actor who has a modicum of talent and charm. And two, he’s managed to actually be a kick-ass action hero with a name like Dwayne. Which, in our opinion, makes him totally deserving of his $52 million paycheque in 2014.
Robert Downey Jr.
Downey Jr. is a real Hollywood comeback kid. During the 90’s RDJ just went ahead and fell off the rails. Cue the usual Californian debauchery – drink, drugs, girls, guys, jail… But the wise-cracking cool dude got himself rehabilitated and Hollywood welcomed him back. And that’s good, not just for Rob-Dow-J, but also for his bank manager. His stint in Marvel’s Iron Man trilogy puts our boy well above his paycheque peers, with $75 million.
