Award Season Fever

Ah, February. It’s a hard time to be a Hollywood celebrity; you’ve barely any time to recover from the stresses and strains of the BAFTA Awards before you have to go through it all again for the Oscars. Such a hardship, eh?

Of course, there’s a pretty big crossover between the BAFTAs and the Oscars – the nominations shortlists are often quite similar – so for those with their eyes set on a little golden statue BAFTA night is an important indicator.

So, what can last weekend’s BAFTAs tell us about the upcoming Oscars? Let’s look at the nominations…

Best Film

BAFTAS: Birdman, Boyhood – Winner, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything.

Oscars: American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash

The Oscars may still offer a surprise, as it has a longer shortlist with three films that didn’t make the BAFTAs list. There have been complaints that this years’ Oscar shortlists are overwhelmingly white, so maybe historical drama Selma can restore some balance by repeating its Golden Globe success, however the fact that Boyhood was twelve years in the making does give it some additional weight.

Best Actor

BAFTAS: Eddie Redmayne (The Theory Of Everything) – Winner, Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), Michael Keaton  (Birdman)

Oscars: Steve Carell, (Foxcatcher), Bradley Cooper, (American Sniper), Benedict Cumberbatch, (The Imitation Game), Michael Keaton, (Birdman), Eddie Redmayne, (The Theory of Everything)

The talk of the town has, for some time, been all about Eddie Redmayne’s performance as Stephen Hawking, and his BAFTA win makes him a favourite for the Oscar; at the same time, this is the beloved Benedict Cumberbatch’s first Oscar nomination (yes, really!), Bradley Cooper is a popular favourite, and Michael Keaton’s performance was a strong one.

Best Actress

BAFTAs: Felicity Jones (The Theory Of Everything), Julianne Moore (Still Alice) – Winner, Reese Witherspoon (Wild), Amy Adams (Big Eyes), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl)

Oscars: Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Reese Witherspoon (Wild)

Still Alice won’t be released in the UK until the 21st February, so this is a category that’s hard for the person on the street to judge; however Julianne Moore has been a strong favourite for a while. There is still a chance that Reese Witherspoon or Rosamund Pike might snatch victory, however.
