Without advertising, television simply wouldn’t exist as we know it. Thankfully, television advertising has come a long way, and has left us with some pretty hilarious, memorable examples. Here, we will show you our selection of the most memorable adverts that have aired on British television in the past 10 years.
Aleksandr Orlov (comparethemarket.com)
One of the most used ideas in British advertising history, the meerkat concept has proved to be very lucrative and memorable for UK based company, comparethemarket.com. The concept has inspired numerous spin-offs, television sponsorships, soft toys and even a ‘comparethemeerkat’ website and social media accounts. Simples.
Life’s For Sharing (T-Mobile)
When this advert aired in 2009, it took up an entire ad break. Depicting a flashmob in the centre of a busy Liverpool Street Station, onlookers were baffled when a group of seemingly ordinary train users broke out into a synchronised dance. This was a truly memorable advert, mainly due to its airtime alongside complications faced by producers while filming, including chasing onlookers who pulled interesting facial expressions to sign release forms.
Al and Monkey (PG Tips)
This series was another successful one that PG Tips still continues to use. It depicts a character called Al, played by comedian Johnny Vegas, and the character of Monkey, who is essentially a sock puppet inspired by traditional PG Tips adverts. This advert proved to be particularly popular when they returned to television screens in 2007-2009, with the revival advert entitled “The Return” airing from January 2007. Both characters were also used in advertising campaigns for ITV Digital, which was declared defunct in 2002.
Eyebrows (Dairy Milk, Cadbury’s)
This advert, which aired in 2009, features a boy and a girl in a photographer’s studio. Seemingly normal at first, the boy presses a button and Freestyle’s ‘Don’t Stop The Rock’ begins to play, at which point the children move their eyebrows perfectly in time with the music. This advert is a mixture of funny and weird in a way that saw it go viral on YouTube, which was highly beneficial for the Dairy Milk brand.
