So, what are the shows that everyone is talking about and you simply can’t miss? In no particular order, here are our top picks for 2021!
1. Handmaid’s Tale
This series, which is based off Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name, became an instant success due to the themes it explores and the stunningly visual way it’s filmed. Set in the fictional Gilead, the story follows Offred, played by Elizabeth Moss, as she navigates a dystopian USA after a second American Civil War – and after a totalitarian society took over.
You should definitely give Handmaid’s Take a go if you like a dark series with twists and turns and unique nail-biting moments. You can watch it on Amazon Prime. Here’s the trailer for the latest season:
2. Loki
The God of Mischief is back, this time on Disney+. Loki is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after Avengers: Endgame, and is all about an alternate version of the Norse god after he accidentally created a new timeline. He has to help the mysterious Time Variance Authority and is, unsurprisingly, not keen on it at the start…
The show features time travel, amazing visual effects and a gorgeous soundtrack – and, of course, the fun banter Marvel is known for.
3. Deutschland 89
If you’re a fan of Cold War spying thrillers, then Deutschland 89 is for you. This German show is a sequel to Deutschland 83 and Deutschland 86, and follows an East Germany agent after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
You can watch this show on Amazon Prime or Channel 4 and enjoy as the plot thickens while Stasi agents do what they can to protect themselves ahead of uncertain times.
4. Line of Duty
A BBC iPlayer and ITV show, Line of Duty tells the story of DS Steve Arnott, a firearms officer transferred to Anti-Corruption Unit 12 when he didn’t want to cover up an unlawful shooting. His new job is to uncover corruption within the unit and, if you like cop shows, you’ll certainly like the way Line of Duty is told.
Full of well-written dialogue and drama, the show masterfully weaves themes of police corruption and involvement with organised crime – and makes you want to binge-watch!
5. Anne Boleyn
Love period dramas? Channel 5’s Anne Boleyn reimagines the story of Henry VII’s second wife in three parts by showing us the final months of her life. It’s a show that recounts the struggle of women in Tudor England as well as a desperate endeavour on Anne’s part to see her daughter’s future secured, especially as she fails to give Henry a male heir.
The show stars Jodie Turner-Smith as the iconic queen and is as much a historic piece as it is a psychological thriller.
6. Mare of Easttown
Kate Winslet is a detective in a small town in Pennsylvania and is investigating the murder of a teenage mother in a suburb. Her character goes through a lot of personal issues as she struggles to find the killer and tries to keep her own life together.
You’re in for a ride as the eponymous Mare slowly unfolds the mysteries around her. You can watch this highly acclaimed crime drama on Sky Go or NOW TV.
7. Your Honor
A miniseries starring Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle, and with the very interesting premise of a New Orleans judge finding himself on the wrong side of the law after his son accidentally kills a teenager in a hit-and-run.
The judge, while initially wanting his son to turn himself in, quickly changes his tune when he realises the victim is the son of a local mafia boss. The show (which is on Amazon Prime, NOW TV and Sky) will keep you on the edge of your seat and it’s certainly a must-watch in 2021!
8. The Underground Railroad
Our cheap TVs are also great to watch a show like The Underground Railroad, a fantasy historical drama miniseries. The story is about a Georgian woman who escapes from slavery and gets on a train in search of a better life – however, she’s pursed by a slave catcher intent on finding her.
Set in southern USA in the 1800s and using magic realism to tell a tale of secrete routes, safe houses and abolitionists aiming to take down slavery, it’s a gripping show you won’t want to miss out on. You can find it on Amazon Prime.
