Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the most influential directors of our generation, and a lot of his work has scooped several awards, including three Academy Awards, seven Golden Globes and eleven Emmys. Known for movie classics such as Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan and E.T – the Extra Terrestrial, his films are known all over the world and are treasured in our memories forever for children and adults alike.
However, as well known as his films are, there are some interesting facts about them which you may not know…
E.T – the Extra Terrestrial
1. An important thing to know about Steven Spielberg’s work is that he aims to make his films feel as real as possible. In E.T, he shot the majority of the film at a child’s eye-level so that viewers would watch the film from a child’s perspective, and we would see the story through Elliott’s eyes.
2. E.T’s voice was recorded by an elderly woman who smoked two packets of cigarettes a day, which is which gave her voice that croaky, husky quality. She was only paid $380 for her trouble.
3. In the scene where the boys take E.T trick or treating dressed as a ghost, they walk past a child dressed as Yoda from Star Wars. E.T acts as though he recognises him, which suggests that he and Yoda were from the same galaxy. In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, an alien species which resembles E.T can be seen in the galactic senate scene.
Jurassic Park
1. The glass of water which rippled due to impact tremors from the T-Rex’s stomping feet was actually caused by a guitar string underneath the dashboard directly beneath the cup.
2. The sound of the T-Rex’s footsteps were said to have been of huge sequoia trees being cut down and falling to the ground. Also, the sound of the T-Rex’s roar was made from a mixture of dog, penguin, tiger, alligator and elephant.
3. In the scene where the group encounters the sick triceratops, they also come across a rather large pile of its ‘droppings’. They make faces as though it smells awful, but in actual fact it was made of mud, clay and straw, and was covered in honey and papayas so that flies would swarm around it.
Hook
1. There is a scene where a couple that are kissing in the distance get sprinkled with fairy dust and start to float up in the air – little do people know that they are actually seeing a cameo appearance from George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.
2. The word ‘bangarang’ is actually a Jamaican slang word which means uproar and or disturbance, and is yelled by the lost boys as their catchphrase.
3. David Bowie was originally meant to play the part of Captain James Hook but turned down the role, and instead Dustin Hoffman played the villainous pirate.
Of course there are plenty of Spielberg’s movies to choose from, but these are just some our family favourites. Many of his films we all have stored away in our film collections, and will watch them time and time again.
