There is no denying that Superheroes have well and truly taken over both TV and cinema. The genre has become increasingly popular over the last few years, with more and more comic book characters being adapted for the little and big screen.
Movies in particular have proven to be a huge success. For DC comics, it started back in 2005 with the release of Batman Begins. This went on to be the first of a truly successful trilogy, which reintroduced us back to the character of Batman in a new and exciting way.
However, Marvel have definitely been the heroes of the Superhero genre. Their carefully crafted shared Marvel cinematic universe has seen a number of our favourite superheroes join forces to save the world.
We don’t see the movies slowing down either, with a whole bunch of them scheduled to be released this year.
Has there ever been a better time to be a fan of comic books? We don’t think so! Here are the superhero movies that you need to look out for this year.
Deadpool (12th February)
Ryan Reynolds is reprising the role that he first played in the X-Men film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He has said that the character in this film is a little different from what we had previously seen of him, stating that he’s lot more relatable to the comic book character of the same name.
After being subjected to a number of horrific experiments, Deadpool is left with a disfigured appearance, an unstable personality and special abilities such as accelerated healing. Because of this, he vows to hunt down the men who destroyed his life.
This movie is definitely NOT one to take the children to watch – it’s strictly for the adults.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (25th March)
Is it wrong to say that one of the reasons for why we’re so excited for this movie is so we can sit and judge Ben Affleck as Batman? Surely everyone is thinking the same! He has big boots to fill after Christian Bales portrayal of the Dark Knight, so we’re crossing our fingers that he does well. Henry Cavill reprises his role as the Man of Steel – Superman. It’s also the first appearance of Wonder Woman and the first time that these three heroes will appear together.
The film sees Batman travel to Metropolis to take on Superman, who he believes has become a threat to humanity. However, as the superheroes prepare to face off, a threat bigger than both of them arises. Can they work together to save the world?
There is only one question on everyone’s mind when it comes to this film and he involves the age old question of Batman vs. Superman; who do you prefer? Well, it’s time to make a choice!
Captain America: Civil War (29th April)
Captain America: Civil War is the third film in the Captain America franchise, and the thirteenth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will also feature Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man – something that the fans of the Avengers films are extremely excited for.
The film takes place a year after the events of the last Avengers film, an international incident that left behind a lot of damage. The government decide to pass an act that will regulate the activity of the superheroes. This causes a fraction within the Avengers, with Captain America and Iron Man on two different sides.
In what has been described as an epic battle between the two fan favourites, we’re finding it pretty hard to choose a side.
Suicide Squad (August 5th)
Suicide Squad is another offering from the creative minds at DC movies. It features a whole host of super-villains from the comics – and a pretty amazing cast portraying them. The cast includes: Will Smith as Deadshot; Tom Hardy as Rick Flag; Margot Robbie as the crazy Harley Quinn; Jared Leto as the Joker; Jai Courtney as Boomerang and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
The plot involves a whole bunch of evil villains being recruited by a secret government agency. The team are expected to carry out dangerous missions that could easily get them killed. They will receive shorter sentences if they complete the missions.
We’re so excited to see Harley Quinn and the Joker in a film together – it’s what Batman fans are extremely happy about!
