As Christmas slowly takes over our thoughts and days, it’s always good to see which retailers are really putting their all into creating the best Christmas adverts.
Christmas is about many things, but in this modern, consumer society, we often associate it with shopping, so who we choose to buy our Christmas presents from is an important decision, not only to us but also to the retailers – if not more so!
That’s why each year we’re treated to some spectacular and some downright strange Christmas TV ads. Last time, we took a look at last year’s Sainsbury’s ad, the classic Coca-Cola annual ‘holidays are coming’, and the 2013 John Lewis ‘Bear and the Hare’ ad.
Toys R Us: Magical Place (1989)
Similar to Coca-Cola, Toys R Us’ famous Christmas ad has stood the test of time, with each year having a different spin on the same advert. The advert hasn’t changed much since its debut in 1989 – they haven’t even altered the song!
No matter how old you are, once you hear the jungle, you won’t be able to get it out of your head. You know this one: ‘There’s a magical place, we’re on our way there, toys in the millions, all under one roof’ – classic.

When it comes to Christmas food, you don’t need to spend big money on some fancy Christmas advert – you can just show it! But, if you really want to drive the point home that your food is the best in the land, why not have a woman with one of the smoothest and most soothing voices in the world describe it to you.
That’s all you need. Every time people saw this advert, their stomachs were always craving some turkey with stuffing or a good helping of Christmas pud – even if they didn’t like it!
And who could forget those famous lines: ‘This isn’t just Christmas food, this is M&S Christmas food’.
This advert is our favourite simply for its clever combination of dark humour and with that iconic Christmas song we’ve all heard, ‘Walking in the Air’. The set-up is rather simple, but it’s the dark but incredibly humorous turn the advert makes that makes this ad brilliant.
Rather than show off the spirit of generosity or sharing, the advert instead opts to show just how great Irn-Bru is.
