Since its birth, television has evolved more quickly than the creatures from Evolution and with that evolution we have seen an endless amount of different technologies. We’ve seen the good ones, the bad ones and the ugly ones (literally). In all that time though, there have been some which have not only been good, but have stood the test of time and are still being used today (but in a more modern form).
However, choosing which ones are truly special – the ones that have us TV nuts going wild – is no easy task. But in the spirit of competition, and because we’re some of the best cheap TVs providers out there, we thought we’d put together a short list.
HD Resolution
You might be a little too young to remember (which makes us feel like dinosaurs), but once upon a time in the land of technology, televisions didn’t always produce the best quality. Don’t believe us, flip over to the hardly viewed shopping channel, or that obscure gaming one on your cable box and you’ll know what us oldies had to live with for the majority of our TV lives.
It took a lot of time and money, but now, we can sit back and watch buckets of stunning HD quality television, so it’s only fans of 2am jewellery hunting that’ll suffer now.
HDMI
Gone are the days of falling over a coil or wires or impaling your foot on the ends of a group of wires, as all HDTVs at one point had a multitude of video-component inputs ( some still do), but unless you’re a cable box installer, you’ll have no further need for them. Nowadays, HDMI rules all of your video inputs and rightfully so – one wire equals less problems. Oh and did we say that it was much cheaper – dirt cheap you might say – compared to other wires; because it is.
Streaming Services
Okay, we know that this isn’t a TV exclusive technology as its technical a pioneer invention of the internet, but the fact that this kind of service is available is something special indeed. It used to be that catch-up services or broadcasters such as Sky would handle all of our on-demand services, but now we can access hundreds of films and television shows for under £10 a month, which is a fact that often goes over-looked.
Online Updates
Similar to how most gaming consoles, computers and mobile devices work these days, TVs now have the ability to receive updates through the internet, which is arguably one of the most important features of a connected TV. Through these updates, manufacturers can update their televisions by adding or updating apps, overhaul interfaces or even address certain problems such as picture quality problems. Isn’t the internet a magical thing?
Built in Players
If you’re in the business of boasting a bulking DVD collection, then there’s no better technology for your TV than a DVD/Blu-Ray player add on. Yes, this might be a simpler entry on this list than HDMI or instantly having access to hundreds of films and television shows, but sometimes, simpler is better. Having a player built into your television means you don’t have to fork out extra for a separate mechanism, and it also maximizes your TV space with no extra cables or wires!
Big Screens
Ever since the first HDTV made its way to the shelves, first with rear-projection and now with flat panel technologies such as LCD, screens have gotten much bigger – and much cheaper. Most people buying a television, ‘new’ these days will be able to find an affordable one with at least a 60 or 70 inch screen, bringing the biggest and most immersive images into more homes than ever. It could be the best way to spend your money on an HDTV is to get a bigger screen.
There are many more excellent television technologies apart from these, and there’s probably a countless amount on the way – something which we can’t wait for!
