Last month we started a series on TV’s most kickass female characters, in honour of it being Women’s History Month. We were looking at all our favourite TV shows that featured a female character as its lead, or just those shows that showcased an empowering female character.
We looked at Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Veronica Mars (Veronica Mars) and Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones) – all three of them being amazing female protagonists in their own way.
Today, we have decided to carry on with this series, and look at another three of TV’s badass ladies.
4. Michonne (The Walking Dead)
The Walking Dead is an American TV show that is based on comics of the same name. It follows a group of strangers who are forced to face an apocalyptic world where flesh eating zombies have taken over.
Michonne is first seen in the shows second season, but doesn’t become an established character until the third. At first she is portrayed as a woman of little words, who doesn’t like to be in large crowds. Over the seasons, she has become more comfortable with the group – taking on more of a leadership role.
Her weapon of choice is a katana, and she wields it like a pro! We wouldn’t want to cross her.
What we like best about Michonne, is that whilst she can kick ass, at times she is also portrayed as being caring and maternal.
5. Olivia Pope (Scandal)
Scandal is a political drama television series, in which Olivia Pope is the main protagonist. She is a former laywer who now owns a crisis management firm in DC, which specialises in political situations.
She is emotionally strong, professionally powerful and personally complicated. Not only is she strong, but she has a feminine leadership style.
We like her because she’s relatable – she’s tough but also allows herself to cry and break down emotionally at times.
Pope is willing to break and bend the rules for her clients – and never backs down from a challange.
Scandal is well worth giving a watch – the plot is easy to follow and episodes move quickly.
6. Kate Beckett (Castle)
Castle follows a crime novelist who is brought in after a murderer uses his books as inspiration for a series of murders. He meets NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, and manages to use his connections with the Mayor to earn himself a place on the team – shadowing Beckett.
Beckett is a homicide detective who joined the force after her mother was murdered in an unsolved case – one that she desperate to solve.
Initially cold towards Castle, she eventually warms up to him and they form a brilliant working relationship, and later a personal relationship.
Beckett is beautiful, but she’s also intelligent and an amazing detective. She shows that she really cares about the victims of the crimes she solves, and goes a long way for their families.
She cares about the sanctity of the law, acting as a methodical and logical counterpoint to Castle – who is often silly and outlandish. Each week we see her find, interrogate and put criminals behind bars. Although she is a woman in a male environment, she commands respect and earns it.
