“Do you like scary movies?”
Halloween is traditionally a time for spooks and spirits, ghosts and ghouls – and, of course, a good scary movie! If you’re planning a night in this Halloween, then it’s time to light your jack-o’-lanterns, turn the lights off, and grab a nice big pillow to hide behind. If you’re not sure what to choose, here are some of our favourite Halloween films…
Halloween
Well, obviously! John Carpenter’s horror classic from 1978 introduced the terrifying Michael Myers to audiences everywhere, and it still holds plenty of scares more than 35 years later. (Unlike some of the sequels…) It was also one of the first big slasher films, paving the way for many other films, including:
Scream
Halloween and its followers created so many tropes and clichés that an entire franchise spawned from them – Scream, directed by Wes Craven in 1996. Remember, don’t run upstairs, and never say you’ll be right back!
The Ring
OK, so this is a remake – but many people find Gore Verbinski’s Americanised version from 2002 to be a little more accessible than the Japanese version made in 1998 by Hideo Nakata. (Still, if you’re happy with reading subtitles, you should definitely check out the original!) This is the film that brought the stereotype of the “scary Japanese girl” firmly over to the West.
The Crow
Stepping away from supernatural horror and slasher films to a cult classic that spawned a million easy Halloween outfits for Gothically-inclined teenagers. Tragically, this was the last film that Brandon Lee – son of Bruce Lee – ever made. He was killed in an on-set accident before completing his scenes, and the movie was completed with the use of a double and re-use of footage that had already been taken.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Tim Burton’s animated classic is a perfect way to move from Halloween to the next big holiday – combining all the spooks and scares of Halloween with the charm and cheer of Christmas! Whether you’d prefer the company of Jack Skellington or Santa Claus, this is a fantastic film to get you in the spirit.
