4 Movies That Every Woman Should Watch At Least Once

There is a specific list of movies that should be watched by all women at least once in their life. These are the ones that have fearless female leads, inspiring female friendships or female characters that aren’t defined by the men in their life.

These movies don’t always include Oscar winning performances and they don’t always have a touching or moving story behind them, but they’re definitely the films that embody the phrase “girl power.” And for that reason alone, they need to be enjoyed at least once by women around the world.

Here at Cheap TV’s, we’ve whittled the list down to just 4 of our favourites (and believe us when we say it was hard).

Legally Blonde

Reese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods, a blonde sorority queen who enrols herself in Harvard University after her boyfriend breaks up with her for being “too blonde.” Determined to win him back and prove him she’s more than just blonde hair, she throws herself into succeeding at law school.

Despite the obstacles she faces along the way, she never gives up. She doesn’t sacrifice who she is as a person either, showing that brains and beauty do exist together.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Before Sarah Michelle Gellar redefined the meaning of girl power in the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there was a little film that went by the same name.  In fact, it was the 1992 movie that made the TV show version possible. The film introduced audiences to the idea that a girl could save the world and look good whilst doing so.

Kristy Swanson played Buffy, a high school student who finds that that she is a vampire slayer, tasked with the job of defending the world against vampires. She tries to keep a normal lifestyle whilst taking the job seriously.

Brave

Whilst no one really associated Disney with “girl power” in the past, due to the princesses always needing to be saved by their prince, they have got a lot better over the years. We all know about Frozen, but it’s actually another Disney movie that we think really embodies the meaning girl power.

The main protagonist in Brave is Princess Merida. Determined to map out her own path in life, she refuses to marry the son of her father’s friend. Instead, she flees the safety of her castle on horseback to find her own adventure. She’s also pretty nifty with a bow and arrow!

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games films introduced us to one of the toughest and maybe one of the greatest female heroines of this decade. Set in an apocalyptic and dystopian world, the film is centred on the “hunger games” – an annual event where two young children from each of the 12 districts are selected to fight each other to the death.

Katniss, the main character and heroine of the film, volunteers to take her sisters place after she is selected. From then onwards, we’re introduced to a woman who is strong, independent and willing to do anything to ensure the survival of her family. She’s intelligent and brave, and vows to stick up for those who can’t stick up for themselves. This is part of the reason why she becomes a symbol for the rebellion and a symbol for hope.

How many of these were on your “to watch” list? We’re definitely going to be hunting down our DVDs this weekend to relieve all the fantastic girl power moments.
