We’re not surprised to hear the news that Walt Disney Studios have announced plans for a further 13 classic animated Disney movies to be remade into live action films. Following the success of movies such as Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella, it was only a matter of time before they started to add more movies to their plans.
There have been lots of mixed opinions on whether these movies breathe new life into some of the oldest Disney animated classics or whether they are touching something that is best kept as it is.
Whether you enjoy these live-action films or not – they’re definitely happening. In fact, Walt Disney aren’t even the only ones to be jumping on the Disney-bandwagon – other movie studios are also following suit. Here are the 4 that we’re most excited or curious about.
The Jungle Book
This live –action remake of the 1967 animated classic will be hitting cinemas all around the world in April this year. The 3D live animation film has been directed by Jon Favreau and has a brilliant cast, including Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Bill Murray as Baloo and Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha.
The plot will closely follow the original, although we imagine that there will be a bigger emphasis on the action scenes.
Beauty and the Beast
The live-action version of Beauty and the Beast is one that is highly anticipated. Staring Emma Watson as Belle, the film finished filming last year and will be released in 3D at some point in 2017. The cast also includes Dan Stevens as the Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston and Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts.
The movie will obviously follow the plot of the original but we’ve been promised a brilliant and modern twist. We think Emma Watson will be perfect in the role of the bookish girl who ends up falling in love with a scary and unattractive beast.
The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid live-action movie has just been announced, so details are a little sparse ATM. However, we do know that Kickass and Carrie star Chloe Grace Moretz has landed the lead role of Ariel, the mermaid who longs to be human. It’s also not being produced by Walt Disney – the film is being remade by Universal Studios.
Little is known about the film just yet, but it’s said that it’s going to more loyal to the Hans Christian Andersen version than the Disney one. A little scarier maybe?
Dumbo
Tim Burton has recently announced that he will be behind the live-action remake of Dumbo. Originally released in 1941, the animated film told the story of Dumbo, a baby elephant with big ears that discovers he can fly.
The classic elephant story will be brought to life, sharing even more of Dumbo’s story, including lots of new facts and information. We think it’s going to be adorable.
No one has been cast yet but we’re definitely looking forward to it!
